Neurofeedback is a non-invasive, personalized brain training approach that helps individuals understand and regulate their own brain activity. This evidence-based method leverages real-time feedback to guide the brain toward healthier, more adaptive patterns. For neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD and Autism, neurofeedback offers a way to harness the strengths of their unique brains while supporting areas that may benefit from greater balance.

How Neurofeedback Therapy Works

Neurofeedback is a collaborative process. During sessions, small sensors placed on the scalp monitor brainwave activity. This information is translated into visual or auditory feedback, such as a video or game that changes in response to the brain’s activity. Over time, the brain learns to self-regulate in ways that feel more comfortable and aligned with the individual’s needs. Each session is tailored to honor and work with the person’s natural brain patterns. Respecting the individuality of their neurodivergence.

Benefits of Neurofeedback for ADHD

For individuals with ADHD, neurofeedback can provide support in several areas without trying to “normalize” or erase neurodivergent traits. Instead, it focuses on helping individuals thrive by enhancing cognitive and emotional skills:

  • Enhanced Focus and Attention: Neurofeedback can help develop a more consistent attention span, making it easier to stay engaged in tasks without constant distractions.

  • Improved Impulse Control: By guiding the brain toward more balanced states, neurofeedback can support more thoughtful decision-making while still honoring spontaneity.

  • Managing Hyperactivity: Neurofeedback encourages the brain to find states of calm and relaxation, supporting those who experience hyperactive energy to feel more in control without stifling their natural vibrancy.

  • Emotional Regulation: It’s common for individuals with ADHD to experience intense emotions. Neurofeedback can assist in cultivating emotional balance, allowing for better navigation of the highs and lows.

Benefits of Neurofeedback for Autism

For Autistic individuals, neurofeedback can be a powerful tool for enhancing sensory processing, communication, and emotional well-being while respecting the person’s innate ways of experiencing the world:

  • Supporting Sensory Integration: Sensory sensitivities are a key part of many Autistic experiences. Neurofeedback helps the brain process sensory information more smoothly, reducing the intensity of overwhelming sensations while honoring sensory preferences.

  • Fostering Social Connection: For those who seek it, neurofeedback can help ease the challenges of social interaction by promoting brain states that reduce anxiety, enhance focus, and support clearer communication.

  • Promoting Emotional Stability: By guiding the brain toward more regulated states, neurofeedback can help reduce meltdowns and support a sense of calm, making day-to-day experiences more predictable and manageable.

  • Reducing Anxiety and Stress: Many Autistic individuals experience heightened levels of anxiety. Neurofeedback can provide tools for reducing stress, leading to greater comfort in navigating different environments.

The Neurofeedback Therapy Process: Collaborative and Individualized

  1. Initial Consultation and Assessment: Your neurofeedback therapist starts by getting to know you and understanding your unique goals. This involves a comprehensive assessment, including a brainwave analysis (EEG), to determine the best approach for your needs.

  2. Personalized Training Plan: Based on the assessment, we create a neurofeedback plan that aligns with your strengths and goals. We work together to identify what’s most important to you. Whether it’s improving focus, regulating emotions, or easing sensory overload.

  3. Neurofeedback Sessions: During sessions, sensors monitor your brainwave activity while you engage with visual or auditory feedback. The brain naturally learns to shift toward more balanced patterns. Where progress reflects your personal goals rather than conforming to societal norms.

  4. Ongoing Support and Adjustments: As you continue with sessions, we regularly review your progress and make any necessary adjustments. Your feedback is crucial. Ensuring that the process stays aligned with what feels right for you.

  5. Sustaining Progress: Once you achieve your desired outcomes, we may recommend occasional check-ins or maintenance sessions to help sustain your growth. Neurofeedback empowers you to keep progressing at your own pace.

How Many Neurofeedback Therapy Sessions Are Recommended?

The number of neurofeedback sessions can vary based on each individual's unique needs and treatment goals. Generally, a typical neurofeedback program follows this structure:

  • Frequency of Sessions: Neurofeedback sessions are usually conducted 2–3 times per week.

  • Total Number of Sessions: The total number of sessions often ranges from 20 to 40 or more sessions. Some individuals may notice improvements in as little as 10-15 sessions. Others with more complex needs may benefit from up to 50 sessions or more.

The overall length of treatment depends on factors such as the condition being treated, the client’s responsiveness to neurofeedback, and the goals established at the beginning of therapy. Regular evaluations will help tailor the treatment to ensure optimal progress and outcomes.
